Been a long-held dream of the African Union, the free trade across the continent got a big boost on Wednesday March 21 in Kigali when 44 leaders signed the agreement to create the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). Dozens of locals are feared dead after suspected Fulani herdsmen attacked Umenger community in Guma local government area of Benue state.

According to the reports available to NIGERIANEWS.ca, the attackers butchered several persons, including children and some village elders on Thursday, March 22.

Among those killed in the latest attack, were one James Apav and Ataki Mageri.

The attackers also razed another village called Tse Sameka.

“Several persons have deserted their homes for fear of being killed by the heavily armed herdsmen,” a source quoted in the report said.

The attack has also been confirmed by the Benue state government.

Terver Akase, the chief press secretary of the Benue state governor has confirmed the attack.

“I can confirm that armed herdsmen this morning attacked Umenger community in Guma local government area of Benue state.

“The herders killed and injured some of the farmers who had gone to get food from their farms.

“While we condemn this unwarranted attack, we expect that the killers will be apprehended by security agencies and brought to justice,” the statement said.

Meanwhile, Governor Ortom has pleaded with federal government to upgrade the Exercise Ayem A’ Kpatuma to a full military operation to effectively check the ongoing killings in the state’s rural communities.

Governor Ortom, who made this statement on Monday, March 19, while inspecting four Internally Displaced Persons ( IDPs) camps at Abagana in Makurdi, said full army presence in the state may help to prevent the attacks.

Of all the major players in country’s oil sector, only the Nigerian National Petroleum Company NNPC, has not complied with the requirements of the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative, its secretary said.

The national oil company is unable to explain the intent of a total of $22.7 billion. However, this money was collected by the NNPC after the sale of operating licences. And the receipt of 15 years of dividends in a consortium where the oil company owns stakes.

The NNPC spokesman did not comment on these accusations.

The Nigerian Initiative’s Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative does not have the means to hold a company to account.

However, the secretary says that his reports have allowed the federal government to trace billions of dollars that had been misappropriated.

A California teacher who also serves as a reserve police officer reportedly injured three students on Tuesday after he accidentally fired his weapon during a lesson on gun safety.

Dennis Alexander was about to show the class how to disarm someone when he pointed his gun at the ceiling to make sure it wasn’t loaded, local NBC affiliate KSBW 8 reported.

It was, in fact, loaded, and Alexander accidentally fired a shot into the ceiling. When the bullet fragments ricocheted, some of them flew into the neck of one 17-year-old student, his father told the TV station.

“He’s shaken up, but he’s going to be okay,” Fermin Gonzalez said.

“It’s the craziest thing … It could have been very bad.”

Gonzalez said he only learned about the accident when his son came home with blood on his clothing and the bullet fragments still embedded in his neck.

Alexander apologized for the incident, and both the Seaside High School and the Sand City Police Department quickly placed him on administrative leave. Police are investigating the matter.

“I have concerns about why he was displaying a loaded firearm in a classroom. We will be looking into that,” Sand City police chief Brian Ferrante told KSBW.

The incident underscores one of the main concerns expressed by critics of President Donald Trump’s recent proposal to arm certain teachers and eliminate “gun-free zones.”

Opponents argue that even people with the most extensive firearms training could make a mistake that turns fatal.

On January 9, 2018, President Muhammadu Buhari ordered Ibrahim Idris, inspector-general of police (IGP) to relocate to Benue state where clashes between farmers and herdsmen had resulted in over 70 deaths.

Idris travelled to Benue for one day and delegated delegated Joshiak Habila, DIG operations, as he returned back to Abuja.

Five days later, pictures of IGP Idris surfaced on social media cutting a birthday cake on the occasion of his 59th birthday.

Sadly, the Benue state recorded more killings after his departure but the smiles on the face of the number one police officer showed that he had a pleasant moment.

When Buhari visited Benue over two months later, he was told that Idris did not spend up to 24 hours in the north-central state.

Responding, Buhari said he was surprised by the reports that Idris did not comply with his order.

“I’m not aware that the I-G did not spend 24 hours in the state as directed by me, I am getting to know in this meeting,” he had said.

Ayo Fayose, governor of Ekiti and fierce critic of the president, saw that as an avenue to fire yet another shot at the president.

“What manner of a President will give order to the IGP on January 9, only to be telling Nigerians on March 12 (2 months after) that he never knew that the IGP disobeyed his order?” Fayose asked, obviously taunting Buhari.

  • Parents of the Dapchi schoolgirls say they have been going through a heartbreaking experience since the abduction of their daughters
  • Aisha Buhari adopts the slogan, ‘Leave Our Daughters Alone’, as a rallying cry against the abduction of schoolgirls in parts of the country
  • Parents of the Dapchi schoolgirls abducted by Boko Haram insurgents have trooped to the National Assembly demanding the immediate rescue of their daughters from the custody of the terrorists.

Vanguard reports that the parents on Thursday, March 8, at the Assembly complex, complained that they have been going through a heartbreaking experience since the abduction of their daughters.

The grieving parents who wore black shirts with inscription: We are Dapchi People, said that they were at the Assembly to demand the rescue of their daughters and not to criticise and attack the government.

Daily Independent reports that a father, Yahaya Taributu, said three of his daughters were among the girls abducted by the terrorists.

“Government should go and bring back our daughters”, Taributu said.

Another parent, Aisha Alhaji Bukar, said her daughter was also abducted, adding that she has not being sleeping or eating well since the incidence.

The parents insisted that the security of their town had been very porous, indicating that they were not surprised that their daughters were carted away easily.

Meanwhile, Nigerians have been urged by the wife of the president, Aisha Buhari, to make the abduction of girls in parts of the country the focal point of this year’s International Women’s Day.

In a message posted on her Facebook page, the president’s wife described this year’s celebration as one with a difference. This is as she noted that the day was being marked not long after the abduction of the Dapchi schoolgirls.

NigeriaNews.ca notes that Mrs Buhari announced that as a strong call for the end of such abductions, she had developed a local theme, ‘Leave Our Daughters Alone’.
