The body of a diehard Lionel Messi fan has been fished out from a river near Kottayam, two days after he went missing after his favourite team’s shocking loss in the ongoing Fifa World Cup being held in Russia, reports Manorama News.

Binu Alex, 30, was reported missing since Friday. His ‘suicide note’ saying he has nothing to look forward to now.

He was last seen watching the FifaWorld Cup match, according to his parents, has been missing from the house since 4am, a police officer, told IANS.

A team of police divers and locals on Friday searched the Meenachil river that flows by Arumannoor near here. However, the search was hampered due to heavy downpour. The body was finally found near Illickal.

“A quick search revealed a suicide note in which he says he is leaving the world as he has nothing more to watch and see,” said the officer.

A close relative of Alex told IANS that he was a hardcore Messi fan and his mobile phone had a picture of Messi as the wallpaper.

“On Thursday, he purchased a T shirt like the one worn by Messi and sat down to watch the match. In the morning when his mother got up at 4am to prepare food for Alex, she saw that the back door of the kitchen was open and immediately called her husband.

“They then went to check on Alex and found that he was missing,” said the relative, adding that police was called then.

Alex was unmarried and works as an accountant in a private company here.

Scoring against Argentina isn’t that difficult, says Ahmed Musa

Deadly Ahmed Musa struck two stunning goals to sink Iceland 2-0 on Friday and then promised to do the same to Lionel Messi’s Argentina in Tuesday’s Group D showdown.

The Leicester City striker, currently on loan at CSKA Moscow, became the first Nigerian to score at two World Cups as the Super Eagles secured a crucial win over Iceland, who missed a penalty.

He scored both goals in Nigeria’s group stage 3-2 defeat to Argentina in Porto Alegre, Brazil, four years ago and is relishing the chance to do it again.

But this time he hopes it will knock out the South Americans.

“I think scoring against Argentina isn’t that difficult for me,” he smiled after his man-of-the-match performance in Volgograd. “We know the importance of the game. It’s do or die.”

The African side will secure a spot in the knockout stage alongside Croatia if they beat Argentina.

A draw would be enough to eliminate the Argentines but would leave Nigeria’s fate resting on the outcome of Iceland’s game against Croatia which kicks off at the same time.

Musa also scored twice for Leicester in a 4-2 pre-season friendly defeat against Messi-inspired Barcelona two years ago and said he always scores when up against the Argentine superstar.

“I can remember four years ago when Messi played in Brazil I scored two goals,” he recalled.

“And when I transferred to Leicester I played against Barcelona and he’s on the pitch and I scored another two goals.

“So I think next game anything can happen — possibly I’m going to score another two goals,” he laughed.

– Fighting spirit –

Nigeria coach Gerhot Rohr was full of praise for his side, who are the youngest at this World Cup, especially the way they came out firing in the second half after Iceland put them under the pump in the first 45 minutes.

“What I like in my young team is humility, solidarity and fighting spirit. I thought before this World Cup we were here to learn,” said the German.

“I think this team will be ready in 2022 and this World Cup is coming early, but we have a good chance to win against Argentina.”

Musa, who came into the starting line-up in place of Alex Iwobi, announced himself in magnificent style with two of the goals of the tournament.

Musa’s sweetly struck half-volley fired Nigeria into the lead just after half-time before he added a second with 15 minutes to go to make the game safe.

Iceland got a lifeline in the 82nd minute with a VAR-awarded penalty but dead-ball specialist Gylfi Sigurdsson blazed over the bar.

With Croatia heading the group on six points Nigeria knew a second defeat would mean elimination but now qualification is in their own hands.

Iceland started brightest but Nigeria, with captain John Obi Mikel sitting deeper in midfield than the defeat against Croatia, slowly worked their way into the game as Victor Moses posed a constant threat on the right flank.

Rohr brought on wing-back Tyronne Ebuehi for Bryan Idowu at the start of the second half and Nigeria came out full of running.

The tireless Moses was released down the right and his cross was met by Musa who teed up the ball deftly with the outside of his right foot before unleashing an unstoppable half-volley into the roof of the net.

Musa made the game safe with a breathless second, controlling a long ball without breaking stride, beating Kari Arnason then rounding Halldorsson before powering his shot past two covering defenders on the line.

Both Nigeria’s clash with Argentina and Iceland’s match with Croatia take place simultaneously on Tuesday.

The Super Eagles could find themselves relying on the Group D leaders – who plan to leave big names out against Iceland – to reach the knockout stages.

Two goals from Ahmed Musa ensured Nigeria remain in the hunt for a place in the knockout stages as they saw off Iceland in Volgograd.

Nigeria Super Eagles needs a victory over Argentina in Saint Petersburg to reach the last 16 for the fourth time in history.

And though a defeat to the Argentina would confirm their elimination, a draw would mean they require Croatia to do them a favour against Iceland.

Croatia have already booked their place in the latter stages of the competition, and as such manager Zlatko Dalic has vowed to leave out some of his star players in a bid to conserve their fitness.

Nigeria have faced Argentina four times in their previous five World Cup appearances, losing on all four occasions, but the form of the South American outfit have raised hopes that the Super Eagles can end that run.

Despite having Lionel Messi in their number, Jorge Sampaoli’s side have picked up just one point from their two games thus far, including an embarrassing 3-0 defeat to Croatia on Thursday.

Lionel Messi’s Argentina on brink of World Cup exit after Croatia demolition

Just when it seemed that Iceland were crafting another masterclass in defensive suffocation, despite a Volgograd evening hot enough to remind them of their geothermal springs, Nigeria’s Ahmed Musa struck twice to derail the dream.

At a stroke, the complexion of Group D was transformed, while the Icelandic fans’ much-loved thunderclap chant rang out, by the end, with barely a fraction of its customary Viking menace.

Nigeria and Argentina will play on Tuesday, June 26, 2018 when Iceland face group winner Croatia.

The games happen simultaneously so that nobody has an advantage in knowing the other result before they play.

There are 4 things the German tactician cannot afford on Tuesday:

Cannot afford to drop either Etebo or Ndidi

Unless one of these players is very unfit, they must be fielded against Argentina in what is now a must-win match for Super Eagles of Nigeria.

Super Eagles manager, Gernot Rohr must NOT drop Wilfred Ndidi for Ogenyi Onazi

Cannot afford to be lackadaisical from the first minute

The Super Eagles cannot start the match against Argentina, lacking any tempo. They must start the match as if they are two goals down [which they really are] and looking for the equaliser. Victor Moses has called for an early goal and that is a very good advice. ”We have a plan to apply for Argentina in the hope of scoring goals early and making them feel bad,” Moses told fotbolti.net.

Cannot afford to play a lone striker

In all the matches played before the start of the World Cup, the only encounter in which Rohr has employed a lone striker and scored more than one goal was against Cameroon in the qualifiers for Russia 2018. Against Poland, Serbia, Congo DR, and England – the Eagles lacked numbers in the opposition box to convert chances. Against Iceland, Eagles played with two strikers. In Argentina, the Eagles must get more numbers into the box to unsettle the Argentine defenders to score the needed goals.

Cannot afford to change the starting 11 that played against Icealand.

The Saudi Arabian national team’s rough start to World Cup continued on Tuesday, as the team’s plane caught fire in midair. Flames were spotted coming out of the engine of the Russian Airlines Airbus that was carrying the Saudi team to Rostov, where it is set to face Uruguay on Wednesday.

Thankfully, the plane landed safely at Rostov-on-Don Airport and no one was harmed.

The Saudi Football Association issued a statement saying that “The Saudi Football Federation wishes to reassure everyone about the safety of all the members of the mission of the national team after a minor technical malfunction in an engine.”

The statement was followed up by a tweet from the federation’s official Twitter account.

According to the Saudi Arabian Football Federation, all the Saudi national team players have arrived safely in Rostov-on-Don this afternoon to play against Uruguay, and currently are staying in their residence, and that the fire was merely an accident.

While the incident was alarming, to say the least, just watch the video in the below tweet, it seems no one onboard the Airbus A319-100 was hurt. The Saudi team was seen calmly leaving the plane on its way to the team hotel in Rostov.

Mexico’s goal celebration against Germany quite literally caused a minor earthquake as fans’ wild reaction sparked seismic activity in the nation’s capital.

Mexican authorities reported the reading was recorded at the exact time Mexico took the lead in their Group F World Cup opening match against Die Mannschaft.

Germany were the strong favourites going into the clash, but it was Mexico who started much the brighter side at the Luzhniki Stadium.

PSV winger Hirving Lozano found the back of the net with a spectacular effort ten minutes before the break, sparking wild scenes both inside the packed ground, and back in Mexico.

Mexico went on to win the game, so we can only imagine how wild the celebrations will be late into the night in both Russia and South America.

But it was the reaction immediately after Lozano’s goal that caused an “artificial” earthquake, as SIMMSA – the body monitoring and analysing seismic activity in Mexico – so brilliantly put it.

SIMMSA tweeted: “Earthquake detected in Mexico City during the goal by the national team in the World Cup.”

It later added: “The earthquake detected in Mexico City originated artificially. Possibly by massive jumps during the goal of the Mexico team in the World Cup. At least two sensors inside the City detected it.”

Germany boss Joachim Loew spoke out after his nation’s defeat and claimed theywere “jinxed” after their shock opening defeat.

“Everybody is really unhappy and crestfallen but we have to put this behind us,” said Loew. “Our team has experience of losses.

“We had a couple of shots, but it seemed jinxed and the ball did not go into the goal.

“In the first-half we played very badly. We were not able to impose our usual way of playing, attacking, and there were lots of counter-attacks against us and we were very vulnerable.

“In the second half, we were able to press more, but Mexico drew back and then carried the ball forward fast.”

Mexico’s match-winner Lozano said: “It’s one of the biggest wins in Mexico’s history, for sure and it’s the best goal I’ve scored in my life.

“We all dream of playing in a World Cup and to start in such a positive and important way – I think it’s my best goal by far.”

Russia has denied Nigeria’s football fans the opportunity to bring live chickens into the stadium when the Super Eagles are playing.

As reported by Russia’s Interfax.ru, Minister of Culture and Tourism of the Kaliningrad region, Andrei Ermak told reporters.

“Our information center MCH-2018 receives a lot of various questions: fans from Nigeria asked if it’s possible to go to the stadium with a chicken, it’s their symbol, the citizens are sick with them at all matches, we told them that to pass a live chicken, in any case, it is impossible “, – said Ermak.

At the same time, he noted that if the Nigerians are rooting for their team in other places, “we will, of course, advise them where the chicken can be bought.”

We are ready to satisfy the most eccentric inquiries,” the regional minister added.

The supporters club of the Super Eagles have been known to go into stadiums with a live chicken, which is one of the ways they cheer on the team to victory.

Nigeria fans were turned away from Ellis Park in Johannesburg, South Africa in 2010 after their demand to take chickens, painted in the nation’s colours into the stadium was refused.

Super Eagles take a short walk around their hotel in Kaliningrad. They will train later today at the new Kaliningrad Stadium, where they take on Croatia tomorrow in a World Cup Group D clash. Kick-off is 8pm in Nigeria.

The Super Eagles are the youngest team at this tournament, and have 18 players who could be taking part in a FIFA World Cup match for the first time.

Only skipper John Obi Mikel, Ahmed Musa, Victor Moses, Ogenyi Onazi and Kenneth Omeruo have previously played in the World Cup.

But one of the debutants, William Troost-Ekong, is relishing the chance for them to prove themselves on the world stage.

“Many of us will be playing at the World Cup for the first time, but this may work in our favour, as we may be underrated and so might surprise some teams. We will play without fear,” he commented.

Did you know?

Every time Nigeria have faced European opposition in their opening FIFA World Cup match, they have emerged victorious. Most recently, a thumping goal from Sunday Oliseh gave them a famous first-up victory over Spain at France 1998.
