Olympics doctor gets up to 175 years in prison

Former US Olympic gymnastics team doctor Larry Nassar sentenced to 40 to 175 years in prison for sexual abuse

The judge said Nassar will “be in darkness for the rest of his life”

The former doctor for the US national gymnastics team has been sentenced to up to 175 years in prison for sexually abusing young women under his care.

The sentence capped a week of victim testimony from more than 150 women, including Olympic gold medalists Aly Raisman and McKayla Maroney.

It also prompted several resignations from USA Gymnastics, the governing board for the sport, as well as the president of Michigan State University, where complaints were lodged against Nassar (an ex-employee).

The case has brought the sports industry further into the nationwide discussion over men abusing positions of power.
