Reports had surfaced in 2012, two years after Wilson Oruma’s retirement from football that he was going insane after losing reportedly N1.2Bn in an oil business misadventure.
He had gotten in an oil business with a man and invested his life savings in it without proper consultations.
The former Nigerian international, U-17 World Cup winner in 1993, Olympic Gold medallist in 1996 and who was capped many times by the Super Eagles according to close sources is still struggling to recover from the mental disorientation he suffered from the huge loss.
After a football career that saw him toured Europe especially France, Oruma retired on the 26th of November, 2010 having played for the likes of Samsunspor, RC Lens, Sochaux, Nancy, Nimes, Servette Kavala and many others.
In a post by the online media of sports daily, Complete Sports, it revealed Oruma was still battling his mental dejection years after the loss as he has had a topsy-turvy recovery with memories of the loss still giving him sleepless nights.
“Wilson (Oruma) hasn’t really recovered from the emotional disorder which he suffered after he was duped,” his bossom friend Emakpor Dibofun revealed.
“He has been to several places in search of a lasting solution, but it gets worse after a bit of improvement.”
A former Nigeria international and former Chairman of Lagos State Football Association, Waidi Akanni, also added that plans by Oruma’s ex teammates to help resuscitate him to normal life is ongoing.
“We have contacted some of his colleagues whom he played with during his days at the national team and there have been positive news regarding what we are trying to do,”Akanni told Completesportsnigeria.com.
“But nothing more I can discuss publicly just yet, but he needs help.
“We just pray all goes well, so we can help him out of this precarious situation.”
Oruma also features for Nigeria at the African Cup of Nations in 2002 and 2006, ending with bronze medals on both occasions.
