{"id":9053,"date":"2018-03-17T18:51:27","date_gmt":"2018-03-18T00:51:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/nigerianews.ca\/?post_type=news&#038;p=9053"},"modified":"2018-03-17T19:03:12","modified_gmt":"2018-03-18T01:03:12","slug":"africas-only-female-president-resigns-amid-corruption-scandal-claims","status":"publish","type":"news","link":"https:\/\/nigerianews.ca\/news\/africas-only-female-president-resigns-amid-corruption-scandal-claims\/","title":{"rendered":"Africa\u2019s only female president resigns amid corruption scandal claims"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>#Mauritius: #Africa\u2019s only female president resigns amid corruption scandal claims<\/p>\n<div class=\"program--News programBlockHeader\">\n<ul>\n<li class=\"article__title\"><strong>Embattled Mauritian president finally resigns \u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<section class=\"article-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"\">\n<div class=\"hidden-in-basic article__image main-video\">Mauritian President Ameenah Gurib-Fakim, the Indian Ocean island nation\u2019s first female head of state, has finally resigned and will leave office on March 23, her lawyer said.<\/div>\n<section class=\"article__body\">\n<div class=\"article-content\">\n<div class=\"article-content__text article-content__left-column\">\n<div class=\"teads-inread sm-screen\">\n<div>\n<div class=\"teads-ui-components-credits\">In the supreme interest of the country and that of the Mauritian population, she prefers to go,\u201d Gurib-Fakim\u2019s lawyer Yusuf Mohamed said in comments broadcast by Port Louis-based Radio Plus.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Gurib \u2013 Fakim had earlier refused to resign, clashing with the country\u2019s prime minister Pravind Jugnauth, who led a cabinet meeting that asked her to resign or be impeached.<\/p>\n<p>Jugnauth on Friday rubbished a commission of inquiry set up by the president to investigate her conduct in relation to the credit card issued by Planet Earth Institute.<\/p>\n<p>The president ahs been embroiled in a scandal that involved her using a credit card issued by a non \u2013 governmental organisation, Planet Earth Institute (<span class=\"caps\">PEI<\/span>), to do personal shopping in Europe.<\/p>\n<p>Gurib-Fakim has since explained that she \u201cinadvertently\u201d used the <span class=\"caps\">PEI<\/span> payment card that was identical to a bank card she already had.<\/p>\n<p>After informing the London-based charity she\u2019d used their card for about $27,000 of \u201cout-of-pocket expenses,\u201d Gurib \u2013 Fakim says she immediately reimbursed the institute in addition to other expenses incurred on a <span class=\"caps\">PEI<\/span> trip.<\/p>\n<p>The president\u2019s lawyer said her resignation will help avoid a constitutional crisis.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe does not want to see the population and economy suffer,\u201d said Mohamed.<\/p>\n<p>58 year old Gurib \u2013 Fakim became the first female president of Mauritius on 5 June, 2015. &#8211; AfricaNews<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>#Mauritius: #Africa\u2019s only female president resigns amid corruption scandal claims Embattled Mauritian president finally resigns \u00a0 Mauritian President Ameenah Gurib-Fakim, the Indian Ocean island nation\u2019s first female head of state, has finally resigned and will leave office on March 23, her lawyer said.
