\u00a0Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa said Friday that the country \u201chas moved on\u201d in response to claims by former president Robert Mugabe that he was ousted in an illegal \u201ccoup d\u2019etat\u201d.<\/div>\n

\u201cThe nation has moved on. Our focus at this time shall remain on preparing for free, fair and credible elections in 2018.\u201d<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Mnangagwa, 75, stressed that \u201cthe Zimbabwe government continues to honour all its obligations towards the former President\u2019s welfare and benefits, as provided for under the Constitution of Zimbabwe\u201d.<\/p>\n

Mnangagwa added in a short statement that he \u201cnoted recent remarks made to the media\u201d by Mugabe who spoke to foreign journalists at a location in Harare on Thursday.<\/p>\n

It was Mugabe\u2019s first public statement since his resignation in November which was triggered by a brief military takeover and the threat of a no-confidence motion tabled in parliament by his own Zanu-PF party.<\/p>\n

\u201cI say it was a coup d\u2019etat, some people have refused to call it a coup d\u2019etat,\u201d Mugabe, 94, told South Africa\u2019s SABC<\/span> broadcaster, referring to the brief army takeover which led to Mnangagwa assuming power after Mugabe\u2019s resignation.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe must undo this disgrace which we have imposed on ourselves, we don\u2019t deserve it\u2026 Zimbabwe doesn\u2019t deserve it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mnangagwa\u2019s brief response, posted on his official Twitter account and bearing the seal of the presidency, added that Mugabe \u201cis entitled to express himself freely, as is the case for any private citizen\u201d.<\/p>\n
