As of Monday, about 300 of KFC\u2019s 900 locations in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland were open, according to a list on KFC\u2019s website. Some restaurants are operating on a limited menu or shortened hours. It remains unclear when all restaurants will be open.<\/p>\n

\u201dThe chicken crossed the road, just not to our restaurants.\u201d So said an announcement Saturday that tried to find humor in KFC\u2019s chicken shortage, which has prompted the fast-food chain to temporarily close hundreds of its restaurants in the United Kingdom. KFC said the shortage was caused by \u201ca couple of teething problems\u201d with its new delivery partner, DHL.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe know that this might have inconvenienced some of you over the last few days, and disappoint you when you wanted your fried chicken fix – we\u2019re really sorry about that,\u201d KFC said Saturday. \u201cShout out to our restaurant teams who are working flat out to get us back up and running again.\u201d<\/p>\n

As of Monday, about 300 of KFC\u2019s 900 locations in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland were open, according to a list on KFC\u2019s website. Some restaurants are operating on a limited menu or shortened hours. It remains unclear when all restaurants will be open.<\/p>\n

DHL, which recently took over the KFC contract from Bidvest Logistics, acknowledged a problem. \u201cDue to operational issues a number of deliveries in recent days have been incomplete or delayed,\u201d the company said in a statement. \u201cWe are working with KFC and our partners to rectify the situation as a priority and apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The mishap came just months after KFC partnered with DHL as part of the fast-food chain\u2019s ambition to \u201crevolutionize\u201d the food service distribution market in the United Kingdom. When DHL announced in October that it had won the KFC contract alongside logistics firm QSL, it promised to \u201cre-write the rule book and set a new benchmark for delivering fresh products to KFC in a sustainable way.\u201d<\/p>\n

A news release from October said DHL will manage KFC\u2019s warehouse and distribution service, with a \u201cgreater focus on innovation, quality and service performance\u201d and a promise to \u201cprovide a faster turnaround of orders.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u00a0Some customers aren\u2019t happy. \u201cSo we\u2019re going have to hit a McDonald\u2019s up,\u201d says a customer who posted a video on YouTube showing a closed location in Manchester, England. \u201cThis is s— mate. We like our chicken. You know we like our chicken.\u201d Still, KFC assured its customers that \u201cthe Colonel is working on it,\u201d a lighthearted reference to the late Col. Harland Sanders, the chain\u2019s founder.<\/div>\n

The situation was not expected to affect the North American market. KFC spokesperson Tori Oman said it was an \u201cisolated issue\u201d in the U.K. that the company is working hard to rectify.<\/p>\n

Sanders acquired a service station in the 1930s in Corbin, Kentucky, and later transformed it into a restaurant, where he cooked his signature fried chicken. He franchised Kentucky Fried Chicken in 1952 at the age of 62 and sold it for $2 million 12 years later. Sanders, whose image is featured in KFC\u2019s logo, is now known in more than 100 countries for his fried chicken recipe.<\/p>\n

KFC is owned by Yum! Brands, a Kentucky-based company that also owns Pizza Hut and Taco Bell. Yum Brands-owned KFC had 21,487 restaurants worldwide as of the end of 2017. Sales at U.K. KFC stores rose 5 per cent in 2017.<\/p>\n
