{"id":7676,"date":"2018-02-23T23:01:27","date_gmt":"2018-02-24T06:01:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/nigerianews.ca\/?p=7676"},"modified":"2018-02-23T23:04:35","modified_gmt":"2018-02-24T06:04:35","slug":"buhari-presidency-describes-transparency-international-global-rating-as-very-misleading","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nigerianews.ca\/buhari-presidency-describes-transparency-international-global-rating-as-very-misleading\/","title":{"rendered":"Buhari Presidency describes\u00a0Transparency International global rating as\u00a0very misleading with unfair conclusions"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"medium-12\">\n<article id=\"post-header-89556\" class=\"article-header-above\">\n<div class=\"row collapse\">\n<div class=\"medium-12 column\">\n<div class=\"article-header none\">\n<div class=\"meta row in-container\">\n<div class=\"column-12 column\">\n<p>CORRUPTION PERCEPTIONS INDEX 2017<\/p>\n<p>President Muhammadu Buhari: government queries TI\u2019s corruption rating<\/p>\n<p>The Buhari Presidency\u00a0has questioned\u00a0 the criteria or facts used by Transparency International, the anti-corruption watchdog to rank the country 148th least corrupt in the world.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement by spokesman, Garba Shehu, the\u00a0 government questioned the method used by TI to arrive at what it called TI\u2019s \u201d very misleading and unfair conclusions in its assessment of the Federal government\u2019s efforts in this anti-corruption crusade\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Government said while it welcomes constructive criticisms from the anti-corruption watchdog, the organisation has a responsibility to reflect the larger picture of the concrete and verifiable achievements of the Buhari administration since it came into office in May 2015.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPolitical will is the first major component of fighting corruption in any country and President Buhari has made a huge difference by demonstrating not only the political will but also the extraordinary courage to go after high profile looters, including former military service chiefs and Judges.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was once unthinkable to touch or prosecute the \u2018\u2018big men\u2019\u2019 for corruption in Nigeria but President Buhari has ended impunity for corruption.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToday, the Buhari administration has made accountability the bedrock of governance and corruption is no longer fashionable because it attracts consequences.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBlocking leakages for corruption through the rigid enforcement of the Treasury Single Account (TSA) had made life tougher for corrupt officials. He regretted that these efforts were not acknowledged by the Corruption Watchdog.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFigures published by the EFCC, the anti-corruption agency, reveal that\u00a0\u00a0N738.9 billion was recovered in just two years of the Buhari administration and this impressive and unprecedented record is worthy of mention and acknowledgement by anybody genuinely looking at the larger picture of the country\u2019s progress in the war against corruption.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDuring the 7th session of the Conference of State Parties to the United Nations Convention Against Corruption in Vienna, Austria, the Chairman of the Agency Ibrahim Magu noted that the figure represents $2.9 billion dollars.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBesides these impressive recoveries of looted funds, the EFCC has recorded more than 140 successful prosecutions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Federal government has also signed international agreements to recover the proceeds of corruption and to block the laundering of stolen assets abroad by public officials.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnybody who knows where Nigeria was coming from would not believe that corruption is worse under the Buhari administration.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe wonder where they got their facts from.
