Scoring against Argentina isn’t that difficult, says Ahmed Musa

Deadly Ahmed Musa struck two stunning goals to sink Iceland 2-0 on Friday and then promised to do the same to Lionel Messi’s Argentina in Tuesday’s Group D showdown.

The Leicester City striker, currently on loan at CSKA Moscow, became the first Nigerian to score at two World Cups as the Super Eagles secured a crucial win over Iceland, who missed a penalty.

He scored both goals in Nigeria’s group stage 3-2 defeat to Argentina in Porto Alegre, Brazil, four years ago and is relishing the chance to do it again.

But this time he hopes it will knock out the South Americans.

“I think scoring against Argentina isn’t that difficult for me,” he smiled after his man-of-the-match performance in Volgograd. “We know the importance of the game. It’s do or die.”

The African side will secure a spot in the knockout stage alongside Croatia if they beat Argentina.

A draw would be enough to eliminate the Argentines but would leave Nigeria’s fate resting on the outcome of Iceland’s game against Croatia which kicks off at the same time.

Musa also scored twice for Leicester in a 4-2 pre-season friendly defeat against Messi-inspired Barcelona two years ago and said he always scores when up against the Argentine superstar.

“I can remember four years ago when Messi played in Brazil I scored two goals,” he recalled.

“And when I transferred to Leicester I played against Barcelona and he’s on the pitch and I scored another two goals.

“So I think next game anything can happen — possibly I’m going to score another two goals,” he laughed.

– Fighting spirit –

Nigeria coach Gerhot Rohr was full of praise for his side, who are the youngest at this World Cup, especially the way they came out firing in the second half after Iceland put them under the pump in the first 45 minutes.

“What I like in my young team is humility, solidarity and fighting spirit. I thought before this World Cup we were here to learn,” said the German.

“I think this team will be ready in 2022 and this World Cup is coming early, but we have a good chance to win against Argentina.”

Musa, who came into the starting line-up in place of Alex Iwobi, announced himself in magnificent style with two of the goals of the tournament.

Musa’s sweetly struck half-volley fired Nigeria into the lead just after half-time before he added a second with 15 minutes to go to make the game safe.

Iceland got a lifeline in the 82nd minute with a VAR-awarded penalty but dead-ball specialist Gylfi Sigurdsson blazed over the bar.

With Croatia heading the group on six points Nigeria knew a second defeat would mean elimination but now qualification is in their own hands.

Iceland started brightest but Nigeria, with captain John Obi Mikel sitting deeper in midfield than the defeat against Croatia, slowly worked their way into the game as Victor Moses posed a constant threat on the right flank.

Rohr brought on wing-back Tyronne Ebuehi for Bryan Idowu at the start of the second half and Nigeria came out full of running.

The tireless Moses was released down the right and his cross was met by Musa who teed up the ball deftly with the outside of his right foot before unleashing an unstoppable half-volley into the roof of the net.

Musa made the game safe with a breathless second, controlling a long ball without breaking stride, beating Kari Arnason then rounding Halldorsson before powering his shot past two covering defenders on the line.

Both Nigeria’s clash with Argentina and Iceland’s match with Croatia take place simultaneously on Tuesday.

The Super Eagles could find themselves relying on the Group D leaders – who plan to leave big names out against Iceland – to reach the knockout stages.

Two goals from Ahmed Musa ensured Nigeria remain in the hunt for a place in the knockout stages as they saw off Iceland in Volgograd.

Nigeria Super Eagles needs a victory over Argentina in Saint Petersburg to reach the last 16 for the fourth time in history.

And though a defeat to the Argentina would confirm their elimination, a draw would mean they require Croatia to do them a favour against Iceland.

Croatia have already booked their place in the latter stages of the competition, and as such manager Zlatko Dalic has vowed to leave out some of his star players in a bid to conserve their fitness.

Nigeria have faced Argentina four times in their previous five World Cup appearances, losing on all four occasions, but the form of the South American outfit have raised hopes that the Super Eagles can end that run.

Despite having Lionel Messi in their number, Jorge Sampaoli’s side have picked up just one point from their two games thus far, including an embarrassing 3-0 defeat to Croatia on Thursday.

Google has announced it is to open its first African artificial intelligence research centre in Ghana in 2018.

Google boss Sundar Pichai said the multinational was “really looking forward” to opening the centre.

The centre will open later this year in Accra, the company said in an official statement.

“We’re committed to collaborating with local universities and research centers, as well as working with policy makers on the potential uses of AI in Africa,” the statement continued.

The Accra office will join similar AI research centres in places like Paris, Tel Aviv, and, of course, San Francisco.

Below is the full statement by Google

We’ve seen people across Africa do amazing things with the internet and technology—for themselves, their communities and the world. Over the past 10 years in which Google has had offices in Africa, we’ve been excited to be a part of that transformation.

Ultimately 10 million Africans will benefit from our digital skills training program with 2 million people having already completed the course, and we’re supporting 100,000 developers and over 60 tech startups through our Launchpad Accelerator Africa.

In recent years we’ve also witnessed an increasing interest in machine learning research across the continent. Events like Data Science Africa 2017 in Tanzania, the 2017 Deep Learning Indaba event in South Africa, and follow-on IndabaX events in 2018 in multiple countries have shown an exciting and continuing growth of the computer science research community in Africa.

Today, we’re announcing a Google AI research center in Africa, which will open later this year in Accra, Ghana. We’ll bring together top machine learning researchers and engineers in this new center dedicated to AI research and its applications.

We’re committed to collaborating with local universities and research centers, as well as working with policy makers on the potential uses of AI in Africa. On a personal note, both of the authors have ties to Africa—Jeff spent part of his childhood in Uganda and Somalia, and Moustapha grew up in Senegal.

As such, we’re excited to combine our research interests in AI and machine learning and our experience in Africa to push the boundaries of AI while solving challenges in areas such as healthcare, agriculture, and education.

AI has great potential to positively impact the world, and more so if the world is well represented in the development of new AI technologies.

So it makes sense to us that the world should be well represented in the development of AI. Our new AI center in Accra joins the list of other locations where we focus on AI, including Paris, Zurich, Tokyo, Beijing, Montreal, Toronto, Seattle, Cambridge/Boston, Tel Aviv/Haifa, New York, and our Mountain View/San Francisco headquarters. If you’re a machine learning researcher interested in joining this new center, you can apply as a Research Scientist or a Research Software Engineer.

The Federal Government has issued an Executive Order for the removal of Value Added Tax (VAT) from “All Forms of Shared Transportation,” which we believe includes air transport.

The Airline Operators of Nigeria (AON) appreciated President Muhammadu Buhari for listening to the cries of domestic airlines in the country by issuing an Executive Order for the removal of VAT from “All Forms of Shared Transportation,” which includes air transport.

Nogie Meggison, AON chairman, said: “We as Nigeria have been crying out for decades now for discussions on the immediate removal of VAT from domestic air transportation in line with global best practice, but we have barely been heard over the years. VAT is an added burden on our passengers who have limited disposal funds and have reached their elastic point in this difficult time in the nation’s economy.

“This adversely affects the sector by reducing the number of those who can afford to travel by air due to high fares in this tough economic time. This has been shown to be true according to a recent report from the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) that passenger traffic dropped by 27% in 2017 and by another 7% in the first quarter of 2018 making it a total of 34% drop in passenger traffic within a span of one year.”

Furthermore, he noted that: Domestic Air transportation in Nigeria is the only mode of commercial transportation that pays VAT. Road, rail, marine and even foreign airlines operating in Nigeria don’t pay VAT in their home country or in Nigeria with reference to an information circular by the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) which grants them VAT exemption (Information No.: 9701; Circular Dated 1st Jan. 1997); Part L (b) No. 8.

VAT on commercial air transportation is a huge departure from what obtains worldwide and an increased burden on the Nigerian travellers. Ghana, Benin Republic, Togo and Cote d’Ivoire located next door to us have all abolished VAT for air transportation.

He said the recent decision by the Federal Government to remove VAT from Domestic Air Transportation will go a long way to bring succour to groaning Nigerian travellers to be able to afford to travel by air and the growth in demand for domestic air travel will lead to the creation of jobs by the whole air transport service chain (airlines, airports, ground handlers and catering companies) as well as increase revenues for government.

  • Wilder, a big-punching American, has conceded home advantage and is willing to fight Joshua in front of 90,000 fans at Wembley Stadium in Joshua’s home town, London.
  • Joshua’s promoter Eddie Hearn is now sending all “the relevant paperwork” to Wilder’s management.
  • A fight between Anthony Joshua and Deontay Wilder is close to becoming a reality.
  • The trans-Atlantic rivals hold all of boxing’s major heavyweight titles between them. They are both unbeaten, possess frightening punching power, and look set to collide in one of the biggest fights of the year.
  • American Deontay Wilder has agreed terms to fight Anthony Joshua in Britain later this year, in a bout that would crown the first undisputed heavyweight champion since 2000, ESPN reported on Monday.

Briton Joshua (21-0) is the holder of the IBF, WBA, WBO and IBO titles while Wilder (40-0) is the WBC world champion.

Wilder’s co-manager Shelly Finkel told ESPN they had agreed to the latest terms offered by Joshua’s promoter Eddie Hearn.

“We have agreed to the terms that Eddie has put out to us for a fight in the U.K. Deontay has accepted his terms to fight in the U.K.,” Finkel said.

Wilder, in a message posted on his Twitter account, confirmed he had agreed to fight in Britain but said an offer to Joshua of $50 million to fight in the United States was still on the table.

“The $50M offer for him to fight me next in the US is still available,” Wilder said on Monday.

“Today I even agreed to their offer to fight Joshua next in the UK. If he prefers the fight in the UK, the ball is in their court.”

The WBC title is the only one remaining on Joshua’s radar after he added the WBO championship to his collection, by defeating New Zealand’s previously unbeaten Joseph Parker in March by unanimous decision.

The commission also said the maternal mortality rate dropped to 19.6 per 100,000 births

“The main health indicators for the Chinese as a whole are above average in upper-middle income countries,” the commission said.

China has seen a rising life expectancy for its people over the years: from 74.83 years in 2010, to 76.34 years in 2015, to 76.7 years in 2017.

The rise is attributed to improved public health work, disease control and prevention, medical services, childbirth care and traditional Chinese medicine.

The communique reported notable progress in healthcare reform as medical bills, especially spending on medicine, has dropped across the board.

Meanwhile, more people seek treatment at primary-level clinics as the tiered diagnosis and treatment model gained traction.

After lashing back at Canada in response to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s criticism of his new tariffs, U.S. President Donald Trump declared that he loves Canada — but also floated the idea of killing the North American Free Trade Agreement that Canada supports and instead creating separate trade deals with Canada and Mexico.

Canada and Mexico both want to stay in the three-country NAFTA that has existed since 1994. Trump’s Friday comments come nine months into the negotiations, which he initiated, that are intended to make changes to that three-country pact.

“To be honest with you … I wouldn’t mind seeing NAFTA where you’d go by a different name, where you make a separate deal with Canada and a separate deal with Mexico. Because you’re talking about a very different two countries,” Trump said outside the White House.

Canada and the U.S. had their own two-country trade agreement from 1989 until the three-country NAFTA replaced it in 1994.

Trump has been criticized by Canadian and Mexican leaders and numerous members of his own party for hitting such close allies with steel and aluminum tariffs. Trump responded: “They’re our allies, but they take advantage of us economically.”

“I love Canada. I love Mexico. I love ’em. But Mexico’s making over $100 billion a year and they’re not helping us with our border,” Trump said, falsely describing a trade deficit that was $69 billion (U.S.) last year and has never been $100 billion.

Trump’s latest remarks cast further doubt on his commitment to an agreement he described again as “a terrible deal for the United States.” Negotiations have stalled amid several serious disagreements.

Negotiators, however, have shrugged off previous musings from the president in the past and continued with the three-country negotiations. Canada has not ruled out the idea of a two-country agreement without Mexico.

Trump criticized Canada on three separate occasions on Thursday and Friday after Trudeau delivered an unusually pointed rebuke of Trump’s tariffs and vowed to retaliate with Canadian tariffs on more than 100 U.S. products.

Trudeau taped a Friday interview with NBC’s Meet the Press, which airs Sunday, to make his anti-tariff case to an American audience.

“The idea that we are somehow a national security threat to the United States is quite frankly insulting and unacceptable,” Trudeau said, repeating his Thursday argument against the national security provision under which the tariffs were officially imposed.

In a rare nighttime statement on Thursday, Trump called out Trudeau by name: “The United States has been taken advantage of for many decades on trade. Those days are over. Earlier today, this message was conveyed to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau of Canada: The United State (sic) will agree to a fair deal, or there will be no deal at all.”

In a tweet Friday morning, Trump returned to his familiar complaints about Canadian agriculture.

“Canada has treated our Agricultural business and Farmers very poorly for a very long period of time. Highly restrictive on Trade!” he wrote. “They must open their markets and take down their trade barriers! They report a really high surplus on trade with us. Do Timber & Lumber in U.S.?”

U.S. data has consistently shown that the U.S. has a trade surplus with Canada. Canadian data, calculated differently, has shown that Canada has the surplus. Regardless, economic analysts agree that the relationship is largely balanced and that the existence of a surplus or a deficit is not a good way to measure the quality of a trade relationship.

Trump has periodically complained about Canadian agriculture policy, particularly with regard to milk. His administration is demanding changes to Canada’s supply management system as part of the NAFTA talks.

In his Friday remarks outside the White House, Trump falsely claimed: “Canada doesn’t take — I mean, they’re very restrictive as to taking our agricultural product and other things.” Trump’s Agriculture Department reported in March that Canada bought more U.S. agricultural products in 2017 — $20.5 billion (U.S) worth — than any other country.

Trudeau had long attempted to maintain a positive posture toward the impulsive president, responding only indirectly to Trump’s jabs at Canada. The prime minister’s remarks on Thursday represented his sharpest criticism to date.

“I would like for the government to look at the systemic issue of this letter and why such letters are being sent out through those spousal sponsorship applications.”

The letter, from a Canadian immigration officer based in London, England, to a female applicant from Pakistan, says her permanent residency application appears suspect for a number of reasons — including that she is three years older than her husband, a Canadian citizen who has lived in Canada since 2005.

“You and your sponsor (husband) do not appear well matched,” the letter states, a copy of which was provided to The Canadian Press.

“You are three years older than him, he comes from a town four hours from where you live and you are not related, so it is unclear to me why the match was made.”

It is unusual for Pakistani men to marry older women, especially if they are not related, the unnamed immigration officer writes. The officer also notes their wedding guest list of 123 people was small compared to traditional Pakistani weddings.

“This apparent deviation from the cultural norm raises concerns that your wedding may have taken place in order for you to gain permanent residence in Canada.”

Kwan said she followed up with the department, only to find letters with such language are routinely sent to spousal sponsorship applicants from Pakistan to “’tease out a response.’”

“Who are they judge whether or not that marriage is well-matched?” Kwan said.

“It’s one thing to say, ‘I do not believe in the authenticity of this marriage,’ it’s another to make a judgment on the quality of the marriage…. I find that offensive.”

Kwan raised the issue in question period this week and again with Hussen during a Commons committee meeting Thursday, asking for the government to review its treatment of spousal applicants.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau defended the program during question period, saying he was pleased his government has reduced a backlog of applications under spousal sponsorship and has also reduced waiting times from two years to 12 months.

“We also know there is more to do,” Trudeau said.

Improvements to the program have been made, and scrutinizing spousal sponsorship applications is an important part of the work of his department, Hussen added.

“Our department continues to uphold measures to safeguard against marriage fraud and other program integrity risks.”

Indeed, it’s not uncommon for the immigration minister to become involved in cases involving spousal sponsorship that go before the courts.

Last week, a Federal Court judge rejected a judicial review application from Hussen’s office in a spousal case that was initially rejected and then won on appeal. The office felt there was evidence contradicting the wife’s claim that her marriage to a Nigerian man in 2014 was legitimate.

‘I can’t just turn my back’: U of T student and former refugee to bring water crisis solutions to areas in need

Rainmaker aims to combat food insecurity caused by droughts.

University of Toronto student James Madhier was doing research on a barren farm in Ghana in May 2016, when the landowner, a young mother, approached him with her small child in tow.

Madhier, there to study solar-powered farming, expected the woman might simply introduce herself to the researchers, or ask about sustainable water solutions they were exploring that could help her farm — a cocoa farm intercropped with plantain, which had been decimated by a drought.

“We were really shocked,” said Madhier, 29. It was the best thing she could think to do to help her child, he said, a sentiment he sympathized with.

“I left thinking it was not long ago that I was in a similar situation, helpless in South Sudan during the war, and now here I am. I’m coming back from a developed world, Toronto, as a researcher. I can’t just turn my back.”

On the plane back to Toronto, Madhier drew up a plan for what would become Rainmaker Enterprise — a non-profit development organization that aims to bring solar-powered irrigation infrastructure to Africa to combat food insecurity caused by droughts. He founded it in 2017.

Rainmaker Enterprise will host its first annual Water for Peace Cocktail Reception on Saturday, featuring keynote remarks by Roméo Dallaire, founder of the Roméo Dallaire Child Soldiers Initiative, which aims to end the recruitment and use of child soldiers, and South Sudanese-Canadian award-winning musician and former child soldier Emmanuel Jal. The gala will raise funds for Rainmaker’s upcoming pilot project in South Sudan.

The initiative comes just five years after Madhier was selected as one of 129 student refugees given the opportunity to come to Canada for post-secondary education through the World University Service of Canada’s (WUSC) Student Refugee Program.

Madhier grew up under the abiding threat of bombings, militia groups, and famine as generations of civil war ravaged on in South Sudan. He eventually fled the country at 15, finding his way to a Kenyan refugee camp and, through WUSC, went on to attend the University of Toronto, where he is completing peace, conflict and justice studies at the Munk School of Global Affairs.
