{"id":2445,"date":"2017-11-16T08:47:37","date_gmt":"2017-11-16T08:47:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/nigerianews.ca\/?p=2445"},"modified":"2017-11-16T23:45:15","modified_gmt":"2017-11-16T23:45:15","slug":"ethio-telecom-had-beat-mtn-nigeria-to-become-africas-largest-mobile-operator","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nigerianews.ca\/ethio-telecom-had-beat-mtn-nigeria-to-become-africas-largest-mobile-operator\/","title":{"rendered":"Ethio Telecom beat\u00a0MTN\u00a0Nigeria to become Africa\u2019s largest mobile operator"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"program--News programBlockHeader\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"img-responsive lazyloaded\" style=\"font-size: 16px\" src=\"https:\/\/static.euronews.com\/articles\/404859\/400x225_404859.jpg?1510788704\" alt=\"Ethiopia telecoms monopoly now Africa's largest mobile operator\" width=\"958\" height=\"539\" \/>November 17, 2017:\u00a0<span style=\"font-size: 16px\">Ethiopia\u2019s state owned telecommunications company, Ethio Telecom is now the continent\u2019s largest mobile operator.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>This is according to IT Web\u2019s report that with over 57 million mobile subscribers as at November 2017, Ethio Telecom had beat\u00a0<span class=\"caps\" style=\"font-size: 16px\">MTN<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px\">\u00a0Nigeria to become Africa\u2019s largest in terms of its mobile customer base.<\/span><\/div>\n<section class=\"article-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"\">\n<section class=\"article__body\">\n<div class=\"article-content\">\n<div class=\"article-content__text article-content__left-column\">\n<p>\u201cEthio Telecom of Ethiopia is now the largest mobile operator in Africa in terms of subscriptions, with 57.34\u00a0million mobile subscriptions at end-2Q17.\u00a0 Ethiopia is also one of the very few African countries that has not liberalized its telecoms market and introduced competition, so Ethio Telecom has a monopoly,\u201d a sector expert was quoted to have said.<\/p>\n<p>The operator put its success down to an expansion drive that cost them over $1.6 billion in the last few years. The expansion they said contributed \u2018an integral part in terms of customer base and infrastructure growth.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe expansion project has also significantly improved quality of services, with customers enjoying 3G wireless services by upgrading the 2G network across all regions covering all over the country; with also 4G\u00a0<span class=\"caps\">LTE<\/span>, super-fast services, launched in Addis Ababa.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOver the past few years, ethio telecom has been transforming itself to meet its vision of becoming a world class operator and our journey so far shows we are on the right track,\u201d a statement on its website read.<\/p>\n<p>Ethio Telecom\u2019s network capacity currently stands at 62 million mobile subscribers, 3 million fixed line users with a mobile service coverage of 85%. Ethiopia is Africa\u2019s second most populous nation behind Nigeria and the numbers are believed to have played a significant part.<\/p>\n<p>They also boast a vast fiber route that allows optical fiber network coverage as well as an International Gateway Capacity; 42 Gbps (including 3 Terrestrial Route through Djibouti, Sudan &amp; Kenya and a satellite back up).<\/p>\n<p>The East African country is an economic powerhouse in the region having surpassed neighbouring Kenya to become the biggest economy in the region. Their economic strides have received praise of international lenders like the World Bank and International Monetary Fund (<span
