he tells CNN.<\/div>\n<div class=\"el__embedded el__embedded--fullwidth\">\n<div class=\"el__image--fullwidth js__image--fullwidth\">\n<div>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"media__image media__image--responsive\" src=\"http:\/\/cdn.cnn.com\/cnnnext\/dam\/assets\/170907175123-koniku-kore-ted-global-exlarge-169.jpg\" alt=\"Koniku Kore, a new device that may be able to detect explosives and cancer cells. \" \/><\/p>\n<div class=\"img__preloader\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"media__caption el__gallery_image-title\">\n<div class=\"element-raw appearance-fullwidth\">Koniku Kore, a new device that may be able to detect explosives and cancer cells.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"zn-body__read-all\">\n<div class=\"zn-body__paragraph\">&#8220;Explosives have particles and smells coming off the individual and with our device you can tell, without requiring line of sight or contact, you can scan them at the time at a place of your own choosing and you can get into an aircraft and go about your business.&#8221;<\/div>\n<div class=\"el__embedded el__embedded--standard\">\n<div class=\"el__storyelement--standard el__article--embed\">\n<div class=\"el__article--teaseimage\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2015\/11\/20\/health\/cancer-smelling-dogs\/index.html\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"media__image media__image--responsive\" src=\"http:\/\/cdn.cnn.com\/cnnnext\/dam\/assets\/151119194604-05-cancer-dogs-medium-plus-169.jpg\" alt=\"Meet the dogs who can sniff out cancer better than some lab tests\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div class=\"media__caption el__storyelement__title\"><span class=\"el__storyelement__header\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2015\/11\/20\/health\/cancer-smelling-dogs\/index.html\">Meet the dogs who can sniff out cancer better than some lab tests<\/a><\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"zn-body__paragraph\">The invention could also be used to sniff out illnesses in the same way dogs can detect cancerous cells via smells.<\/div>\n<div class=\"zn-body__paragraph\">&#8220;In the same way that a dog is able to detect if someone has prostate cancer, the real question we ask is &#8216;how does a dog do it?&#8217; We can clone that process on our chip, so yes in the same way that a dog can detect diseases or explosives at an airport, it&#8217;s a sensory system, that is essentially what we recreate in our chip,&#8221; Agabi says.<\/div>\n<div class=\"zn-body__paragraph\">Koniku, which means &#8216;immortal&#8217; in the Nigerian Yoruba language, started in 2015 and has already raised $8 million in revenue, according to the founder Agabi.<\/div>\n<div class=\"zn-body__paragraph\">&#8220;We believe quite strongly that it&#8217;s going to be run with biological brains that are made with synthetic biological neurons. That is the declared intention of our company: to build a brain.&#8221;<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"el__embedded el__embedded--standard\">\n<div class=\"el__storyelement--standard el__article--embed\">\n<div class=\"el__article--teaseimage\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2017\/06\/02\/health\/immunotherapy-cancer-debate-explainer\/index.html\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"media__image media__image--responsive\" src=\"http:\/\/cdn.cnn.com\/cnnnext\/dam\/assets\/170601084942-02-immunotherapy-cancer-explainer-medium-plus-169.jpg\" alt=\"Hope and hype around cancer immunotherapy\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div class=\"media__caption el__storyelement__title\"><span class=\"el__storyelement__header\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2017\/06\/02\/health\/immunotherapy-cancer-debate-explainer\/index.html\">Hope and hype around cancer immunotherapy<\/a><\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"zn-body__paragraph\">Addressing ethical concerns and implications of creating humanoid devices, Agabi says: &#8220;I think it&#8217;s unethical not to deploy any resources we have to fight terrorism. It is the urgent problem that we face as a species.&#8221;<\/div>\n<div class=\"zn-body__paragraph\">&#8220;That&#8217;s not to say that we shouldn&#8217;t be careful of bio-integrity,&#8221; he adds.<\/div>\n<div class=\"zn-body__paragraph\">A self-described &#8220;scrawny, nerdy kid,&#8221; Agabi grew up in the suburb of Surulere in Lagos, Nigeria and obtained a Bachelors degree in Physics from University of Lagos.<\/div>\n<div class=\"zn-body__paragraph\">He went on to do further studies in physics and neuroscience in Sweden and Switzerland.<\/div>\n<div class=\"zn-body__paragraph\">&#8220;One of the things growing up in Lagos imparts in you is grit,&#8221; he says. &#8220;Lagos is a place that demands grit.
