9 December 2017:\u00a0Antonio Conte\u00a0conceded that Chelsea\u2019s title defence \u201cnever started\u201d and a lack\u00a0of consistency has made a repeat\u00a0of\u00a0last season\u2019s Premier League win\u00a0inconceivable.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

A visibly frustrated Conte had just watched Chelsea perform flatly in\u00a01-0 away loss to West Ham\u00a0United, their fourth defeat of the campaign and a result that sees them remain 11 points behind the leaders Manchester City. The defending champions have now dropped 16 points, just five short of the entire number they ceded in 2016-17, and Conte admitted that it is far short of the standard required for a realistic tilt at the top. \u201cTo talk about the title race after a defeat, I think it a bit strange,\u201d Conte said. \u201cEspecially as this is the fourth defeat this season in 16 games.<\/p>\n
