{"id":5615,"date":"2017-12-31T18:07:12","date_gmt":"2018-01-01T01:07:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/nigerianews.ca\/?p=5615"},"modified":"2017-12-31T18:07:12","modified_gmt":"2018-01-01T01:07:12","slug":"super-eagles-midfielder-defends-reactions-racist-abuse","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nigerianews.ca\/super-eagles-midfielder-defends-reactions-racist-abuse\/","title":{"rendered":"Super Eagles&#8217; Midfielder defends his reactions after racist abuse"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"story-body\" class=\"story-body sp-story-body gel-body-copy\">\n<figure class=\"sp-media-asset sp-media-asset--lead\">\n<div class=\"sp-media-asset__body media\">\n<div class=\"sp-media-asset__image gel-responsive-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/ichef.bbci.co.uk\/onesport\/cps\/480\/cpsprodpb\/B860\/production\/_99400274_agbo.jpg\" alt=\"Nigeria's Uche Agbo\" width=\"683\" height=\"384\" \/><\/div>\n<\/div><figcaption class=\"sp-media-asset__caption gel-brevier \">December 31, 2017: Nigeria international Uche Agbo has defended his reaction to the racial abuse hurled at him as he was sent off while playing in Belgium.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>His club, Standard Liege, have reported the &#8220;unacceptable&#8221; racist abuse aimed at the midfielder on Wednesday by fans of rivals KV Kortrijk to the Belgian authorities.<\/p>\n<p>The abuse began just before half-time of Liege&#8217;s 2-1 loss, when the 22-year-old initially refused to leave the pitch after receiving his second yellow card.<\/p>\n<p>As he left the pitch Agbo made obscene gestures to the Kortrijk fans, who pelted him with beer cups and other objects.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I understand that I showed my emotions but racism of any form is completely unacceptable,&#8221; Agbo told BBC Sport.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"sp-pullout\"><\/aside>\n<p>&#8220;No matter how hard you try, it is difficult to overlook it and accept such a bad treatment during a football match.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;My club is handling the situation now and I thank our officials, my teammates and the fans for their incredible support so far.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>His coach Sa Pinto defended the Nigerian, saying he was within his rights to respond the way he did because his dismissal was not justified.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;His reaction was legitimate given the abuse against him,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>Standard Liege captain Sebastien Pocognolli also said the behaviour of the fans must not go unpunished.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I have never experienced any like this in Belgium,&#8221; he told local media.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The game ought to have been stopped because of that. Something like this has to be punished.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I can certainly understand the reaction of my player (Uche Agbo) especially after everything he has to listen to.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Agbo has also received support on social media from fellow Standard Liege midfielder and <a class=\"sp-story-body__external-link\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/PaulJoseMpoku\/status\/946710744422330368\">DR Congo international Paul-Jos\u00e9 M&#8217;Poku.<i class=\"sp-story-body__external-link-icon gelicon gelicon--external\"><\/i><\/a><\/p>\n<p>His club also spoke out against the opposition supporters,<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Standard de Li\u00e8ge strongly condemns the attitude of those individuals whose intolerable behaviour is totally contrary to the values defended by our club and the Jupiler Pro League,&#8221; <a class=\"sp-story-body__external-link\" href=\"http:\/\/standard.be\/nl\/news\/racistische-uitlatingen-aan-het-adres-van-uche-agbo\">a Standard Liege statement read.<i class=\"sp-story-body__external-link-icon gelicon gelicon--external\"><\/i><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Uche and other members of our club were deeply shocked by these serious incidents as well as the passivity of the referee body against them.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Our club intends to question the governing bodies so that the community, racist and xenophobic songs are definitely banned from our stadiums.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Agbo, who played for Nigeria at the 2013 Fifa Under-20 World Cup and made his senior debut against Togo in June 2017, only <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.com\/sport\/football\/40692377\">joined Standard Liege\u00a0<\/a>from English side Watford in July. \u00a0He was on the bench for the country&#8217;s last four 2018 World Cup fixtures home and away against Cameroon, the ties against Zambia and Algeria.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>December 31, 2017: Nigeria international Uche Agbo has defended his reaction to the racial abuse hurled at him as he was sent off while playing in Belgium.
