Mexico’s goal celebration against Germany quite literally caused a minor earthquake as fans’ wild reaction sparked seismic activity in the nation’s capital.
Mexican authorities reported the reading was recorded at the exact time Mexico took the lead in their Group F World Cup opening match against Die Mannschaft.
Germany were the strong favourites going into the clash, but it was Mexico who started much the brighter side at the Luzhniki Stadium.
PSV winger Hirving Lozano found the back of the net with a spectacular effort ten minutes before the break, sparking wild scenes both inside the packed ground, and back in Mexico.
Mexico went on to win the game, so we can only imagine how wild the celebrations will be late into the night in both Russia and South America.
But it was the reaction immediately after Lozano’s goal that caused an “artificial” earthquake, as SIMMSA – the body monitoring and analysing seismic activity in Mexico – so brilliantly put it.
SIMMSA tweeted: “Earthquake detected in Mexico City during the goal by the national team in the World Cup.”
It later added: “The earthquake detected in Mexico City originated artificially. Possibly by massive jumps during the goal of the Mexico team in the World Cup. At least two sensors inside the City detected it.”
Germany boss Joachim Loew spoke out after his nation’s defeat and claimed theywere “jinxed” after their shock opening defeat.
“Everybody is really unhappy and crestfallen but we have to put this behind us,” said Loew. “Our team has experience of losses.
“We had a couple of shots, but it seemed jinxed and the ball did not go into the goal.
“In the first-half we played very badly. We were not able to impose our usual way of playing, attacking, and there were lots of counter-attacks against us and we were very vulnerable.
“In the second half, we were able to press more, but Mexico drew back and then carried the ball forward fast.”
Mexico’s match-winner Lozano said: “It’s one of the biggest wins in Mexico’s history, for sure and it’s the best goal I’ve scored in my life.
“We all dream of playing in a World Cup and to start in such a positive and important way – I think it’s my best goal by far.”
